Physician Assistant Duties
A physician assistant directly helps the main physician with any and all medical practices. Most physician assistants work in offices or hospitals and perform a variety of important tasks. A list of the essential duties and goals of a physician assistant may include providing preoperative and postoperative care, assisting during major surgery, prescribing medications, consulting with medical professionals, treating minor injuries, taking X-rays, assessing and diagnosing patients, recording medical histories, performing full examinations and counseling patients on the best health plans available. Physician assistants work under the direct supervision of surgeons and other physicians, and are specially trained to examine, diagnose and treat patients with a wide variety of illnesses and injuries.
Physician Assistant Education Requirements
A prospective physician assistant must earn a bachelor’s degree in health science or a related field. They must also earn a master’s degree from an accredited medical school to complete a specified two-year physician assistant program. There, they will learn about pharmacology, pathology, anatomy and medical ethics. 2,000 clinical hours are required before a prospective physician assistant can enter the job market. Finally, a physician assistant must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam as well as any state exams that will grant them licensure to practice medicine. A physician assistant can get ahead of the competition by choosing to specialize in specific fields, granting them degrees for areas such as nutrition, ultrasound, ambulatory surgery and more. After maintaining the proper certification, a physician assistant must ensure that they can properly care for a patient through critical thinking, logical judgment, compassionate communication and hands-on expertise.
