Clinical Informatics Duties

A clinical informatics specialist is responsible for practicing proper workflow procedures, identifying issues and concerns, offering leadership and guidance to help individuals process facility requirements, design information systems, assist with the creation of new technologies, supporting health care workers, being a constant communicative voice with other healthcare partners, identifying new IT system opportunities, digitalizing client records and overseeing the overall functionality and day-to-day operation of clinical information systems across the facility and community. A clinical informatics professional is a leadership figure, and must possess a knack for communication, compassion, logical thinking and quick decision making. A clinical informatics specialist may also act to promote system functionality by testing new systems and involving other professionals in the health systems process.

Clinical Informatics Education Requirements

Some facilities may only require the clinical informatics professional to have completed a high school degree, as well as several years of experience with related health care technology and health systems. Some positions require a higher level of education, with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. The more qualified a clinical informatics professional is, the more likely they are to be noticed in the job market. Plus, there are several payment perks to obtaining a higher level of education as well. There may be some state-level certifications that a clinical informatics professional may need to obtain before being considered for employment as well.
