Interface and HL7 Duties

With technology becoming increasingly more advanced and complex, it’s important to understand the role of an HL7 interface professional within the healthcare system. Now that HL7 is used in more than 20 countries across the globe, it is important to understand what duties and requirements are asked of an interface and HL7 specialist. Licensed individuals will be asked to perform document control duties, as well as help tie together the facility’s patient registration system, EMR protocol system and transcription system by coordinating them through the HL7 interface. It is increasingly becoming a health standard across hospitals and other medical facilities around the globe, and the demand for knowledge of HL7 interfaces is high. The professional will also be asked to link systems, assess the validity and efficiency of current systems and send communications across all existing systems. The ability to think quickly, stay on top of systems technologies and communicate effectively to coworkers is required.

Interface and HL7 Education Requirements

The passing of an HL7 certification exam is required for a prospective individual to become an interface and HL7 specialist. The individual must pay to take the course, and must pass the exam in order to become certified to use and link this specialized system. While a college degree is preferred, only a high school diploma is required. Those who wish to gain an edge over their competition in the job market can pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related systems analyst field. The individual must comply with all HL7 licensing agreements and must have relevant background experience in health systems analysis and technology.

The salary for professional interface and HL7 analysts varies greatly depending on geographic location, experience and level of education. There is projected growth in the job market for HL7 interface analysts, as the standard for hospital technology is increasingly aiming towards the incorporation of HL7 in all of its systems.
