Emergency Medicine Duties
An emergency medicine professional, also known as an emergency physician, is responsible for providing emergency medicine to patients who are in acute or critical condition. The main goal of the emergency medicine physician is to care for patients who are in life-threatening situations. The primary duties are to help stabilize patients, referring them to the appropriate department for care. An emergency medicine specialist must be adept at working with a team, providing clear communication and thinking critically in order to administer the most immediate forms of care to patients who are in the biggest need. A professional in this field must be able to make quick judgments, as sometimes the patient will not be able to provide any information about their medical history or background. Proper diagnoses must be made in a timely manner and the appropriate treatments must be considered as quickly as possible.
Emergency Medicine Education Requirements
A prospective emergency medicine physician must first complete four years of undergraduate coursework, earning a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or organic chemistry. Then, they must take the Medical College Admissions Test, which is required for placement into medical school. Next, the student must attend and graduate from medical school. This requires at least two years of coursework, followed by two years of clinical hands-on experience, where students will be able to successfully diagnose and treat a variety of different illnesses. After graduating medical school, students will have passed the USMLE exam to be licensed to practice medicine. For those who wish to specialize in emergency medicine, they must complete a 4-year residency training program at a licensed hospital or facility. After the residency is complete, these physicians can take an exam from the ABEM or AOBEM to become certified to administer emergency medicine.
