Internal Medicine Duties
Physicians who work in internal medicine are primarily responsible for all non-surgical treatments and assessments of patients with diseases or injuries to the internal organ systems. Any problem associated with the internal organs falls under the range of duties for an internal medicine professional. On a daily basis, the internal medicine professional will be tasked with treating internal disorders like diabetes and lung diseases, prescribing medication and other specialized care treatments, explaining tests and procedures to patients and their families, treating health problems associated with the internal organs, providing long-term medical care, advising community members about proper health and dieting techniques and collecting and recording pertinent patient information to ensure the best chances of recovery and health. An internal medicine professional must be quick-thinking, with the ability to solve critical problems and work together with a team of doctors to decide the best course of action.
Internal Medicine Education Requirements
Like most physician positions, the internal medicine position requires four years of undergraduate work as well as four to five years of specialized medical school training before becoming qualified to practice internal medicine. A master’s degree or PhD is required in most areas. Afterward, the physician must complete a training residency and then pass all necessary board exams to help them become licensed to practice medicine. Internal medicine physicians must also possess great inductive reasoning and communication skills, as the job largely requires complex problem solving and logical decision making to help patients with time-sensitive needs.
