School Physical Therapy Duties
A school physical therapist is unique from a regular physical therapist, as they must keep in mind the needs and limitations of school-aged children. School physical therapists play an essential role in the physical and physiological health and well-being of their students, helping them heal in a way that does not interrupt the flow of their learning or education. Physical therapists are essentially required to track daily progress of students, maintain their attendance records, provide direct student-therapist contact with the injured area, recommend adaptive technology, make environmental accommodations and instruct others on how to best help the student while maintaining a successful education program for them. School physical therapists tend to work with students with mobility injuries, helping them strengthen their functional skills and positioning placements as well as assist with play and work activities.
School Physical Therapy Education Requirements
A school physical therapist must graduate from an accredited physical therapy program, as well as having acquired a Master of Physical Therapy degree after two years of graduate coursework. Aside from the requirements involved for physical therapy, the school physical therapist must also become certified to work in a state or private school environment as well as understand pediatrics. A degree in child development or education is highly recommended. The individual must also have a passing GRE score, a high grade-point-average and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree. After acquiring all credentials, the school physical therapist must also pass the national physical therapy licensure exam. Then, they must perform an internship from a licensed clinician before seeking a career in a certified education facility or school.
